Joel first encountered Cadence International as an English teacher in Japan. He was teaching Japanese high schoolers in Chigasaki, Japan, which was about a half hour by train from the Lighthouse (Cadence hospitality house) in Yokosuka, Japan. Joel was involved for a year of temporary house directors before the
Cassidys arrived to direct the house long-term. When they came, they brought Mary King to homeschool their two daughters. During the next two years, Joel and Mary fell in love and then were married. After the wedding, the Koedykers returned to the Lighthouse, Joel as an intern and Mary to teach homeschool. After the one year internship, Joel felt called to get further education. Joel, Mary, Nathan (2yrs) and Matthew (8mo), now live in Englewood, Colorado while Joel attends Denver Seminary. In addition to being a student and running Cadence's mailroom, Joel also works part-time at
Foothills Bible Church as their short-term missions coordinator. Mary is a stay-at-home mom and Nathan and Matthew are among the cutest babies in the world.
