Biography of June & Gordon Gustafson
June and Gordon, both from Chicago, Illinois, met at Columbia Bible College in 1948. June had graduated from the University of Illinois as an Occupational Therapist. Gordon entered Columbia Bible College in 1947 after six years in the navy, from the bombing of Pearl Harbor to the first liberty party in Japan. He had been involved in the Navigators ministry, and June was involved with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. They married June 18, 1949, and headed for the Philippines in 1951 to pioneer a new field under the Evangelical Free Church of America. God blessed their ministry on the island of Cebu until health forced them to leave in 1958 with their four children (two girls and two boys). They started the Faith Evangelical Free Church, Ft. Collins CO, in 1958 with a vision of reaching college students at Colorado State University. Today the church has a thriving ministry with over 150 CSU students. “Gus” served on the board of OCSC during this time in Ft. Collins and accepted their request to serve as director of the Christian Servicemen’s Home in Panama in 1961. In 1977, the Gustafsons left for Rota, Spain, after taking a three-year leave of absence from OCSC to pastor the Crossroads Bible Church in the Panama Canal Zone. They enjoyed their ministry at Victory Villa in Rota until October 1981. Because God gave them the responsibility of caring for June’s parents, they returned to the States and started “His House,” ministering to the navy in Jacksonville, Florida. Gordon and June retired from Cadence (OCSC) in 1992.
As for their children, Bill and Grace, now living in Matthews, NC, will spend this, their fourth term, representing SIM in the U.S. after several terms in Ethiopia. Two of their children are in high school, and the two oldest are in college. Dan, head-quartered in Colorado Springs, CO, continues to spend about half-time in Panama as he markets baskets for the Waunann Indian tribe. Charles’ new venture is developing a shrimp shish-kabob business while continuing his work at the Veteran’s Administration in Denver. He and Theresa are proud of seven-year-old Nelson, a reader par excellence. Val is very much into “Shutzhund” training with her German Shepherd, “Aiko”. She, Greg, Luke and Terah make Ft. Collins, CO, their home.
